Lucian

Lucian woke to a low rumble vibrating through his back, and hot scales pressed along the sides of his body. The floor was lukewarm under his ass, and he was naked.

There was a black dragon curled around him, snoring, smoke puffing from his great nostrils.

Lucian stared. This is real. He pressed his hand against the dragon’s belly. Heat soaked into his palm, all the way to his bones.

Knox had spent the night with him. Not just that, because Knox had spent a number of weekend nights in Lucian’s apartment, on the couch. But he’d never slept with Lucian in his bed, never turned into a dragon, and moved Lucian onto the floor, coiling around him like he would a great treasure.

Lucian smiled—he couldn’t help it. Then he remembered Knox’s words. When you smile, I want you to remember that I love you.

His heart skipped a beat. Knox loved him. Really? It seemed impossible. They’d spent a month together, and maybe it should’ve taken longer than that for them to fall in love.

Knox had curved his neck around, tucked Lucian in the hollow of his body, one paw resting over Lucian’s waist. It would be impossible to move without waking Knox—not that Lucian would even think of moving. He followed Knox’s body with his eyes, saw the way Knox had curled his tail around Lucian’s legs, holding on to him.

There was hardly even space for them on the floor—they were squeezed between the bed and the closet, and Lucian could hear the faint whuffling of the dogs as they sniffed behind the door.

Lucian’s twin bed had probably been too tiny for the both of them. He chuckled to himself, ran his hand down Knox’s head, touching the smaller, inky scales where they pressed against Lucian’s hip. Then he traced Knox’s horns, following their ridged surface all the way to their pointed ends.

Knox was a dragon. And Lucian was carrying his baby, a tiny life that was slowly, but surely, blossoming. Someday, their baby would grow up, and Knox would teach the child the ways of a dragon, pass down all the traditions of his flight. Would the baby be a whisperer, too? Or would it only be a shapeshifter?

It didn’t matter, though. Lucian would love his child no matter what. And he was sure Knox would, too.

Knox would be a wonderful dad. Lucian could imagine him as a dragon, looking down at their baby. Or Knox carrying their child on his shoulders, or being surrounded by a swarm of children.

Then he looked down at Knox’s great paw, and wondered how it would feel for Knox to hold a baby so small. Lucian laughed.

The dragon rumbled, smoke curling up from his snout. Then a large red eye fluttered open, its slit-pupil sliding to the side, focusing on Lucian.

“Morning,” Lucian said, smiling. “I didn’t realize you’d moved us to the floor.”

“Would’ve broken the bed,” Knox rumbled, his voice scratchy with sleep. “This is better.”

“My butt hurts. The floor’s hard.” Lucian wrapped his arms around Knox’s paw.
